AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is based on the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It offers 40–55% better compression than JPEG and 20–30% better than WebP, while supporting HDR, wide color gamut, and transparency. Browser support is excellent (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+), but app and OS support is still catching up — hence the need to convert.
This is completely normal. AVIF is significantly more efficient than JPEG. An image that looks great as a 100 KB AVIF might need to be 250–400 KB as JPEG at equivalent quality. If you need the smallest possible JPEG, lower the quality slider to 75–80%.
macOS 13 (Ventura)+, Windows 11 (with AV1 codec), all modern web browsers, GIMP 2.10.22+, Photoshop 2021+ with the AVIF plugin, and most modern Android/iOS devices support AVIF. The format is becoming mainstream but legacy software requires conversion.
AVIF supports P3 and Rec. 2020 wide color gamuts and HDR content. Our JPEG output is sRGB — HDR and wide-gamut data will be tone-mapped and color-converted to sRGB during decoding. If you need to preserve HDR, your workflow needs AVIF-native software rather than conversion to JPEG.
Yes. AVIF decoding is significantly more computationally intensive than JPEG. A 2 MP AVIF might take 1–3 seconds to decode in the browser (depending on your device), while the same resolution JPEG decodes almost instantly. Progress bars show per-file status during longer conversions.
