No. Like all lossy formats, AVIF compression is irreversible. Converting to PNG creates a lossless snapshot of the current pixel state — any compression artefacts present in the AVIF are preserved in the PNG. PNG just ensures no additional quality is lost from this point forward.
Yes. AVIF supports full alpha channel transparency, and PNG also fully supports transparency. When you convert a transparent AVIF (such as a web graphic with a transparent background) to PNG, the transparent areas are preserved exactly.
AVIF is exceptionally efficient — often 50% smaller than equivalent PNG and 30% smaller than WebP. The PNG is storing the same visual information without any compression artifacts, but it requires far more space to do so. A 200 KB AVIF might produce a 2–4 MB PNG.
All major image editors support PNG: Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP, Affinity Photo, Pixelmator Pro, Sketch, Figma (as a design asset), and every OS's built-in viewer. PNG is the most universally supported lossless image format.
