Choose a quality level
Higher quality means larger files and more detail. 90% (our default) is barely distinguishable from 100% and saves significant space. For web thumbnails, 70–80% is often perfectly fine.

Compare file sizes
Each downloaded file shows the size reduction percentage. A typical screenshot at 80% quality shrinks by 60–80% versus the original PNG.
JPG doesn't support transparency. Any transparent or semi-transparent pixels in your PNG are composited over a white background before encoding. This is the standard approach used by image editors like Photoshop. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to WebP or keep the PNG format.
It depends heavily on the image content. Screenshots and images with large flat color areas often compress extremely well — a 5 MB PNG screenshot might become a 200 KB JPG at 85% quality. Photos with complex textures typically see 70–85% size reduction.

JPEG compression introduces artefacts (ringing and blurriness) around high-contrast edges like text. For images with crisp text or sharp lines, use a quality setting of 90–95% or consider staying in PNG format. Screenshots of text are almost always better kept as PNG.
