Why are my WebP files larger as JPG?

WebP typically achieves 25–35% better compression than JPEG at equivalent visual quality. When you convert to JPEG at 90% quality, you're often producing a file that looks similar but is noticeably larger. If file size is important, lower the quality slider to 80–85% for a better size comparison with the original WebP.

Does this work with both lossy and lossless WebP?

Yes. Our decoder handles both lossy WebP (like compressed web images) and lossless WebP (like those produced by Photoshop's "Save as WebP" option). Both are decoded to the same high-quality pixel representation before re-encoding as JPEG.

What happens to transparent WebP images?

WebP supports full transparency (alpha channel). When converting to JPG — which has no transparency support — we composite your image over a white background. If you need to preserve the transparent areas, use our WebP to PNG converter instead.

Why doesn't my image editor or email client accept WebP?

WebP support varies by application and operating system version. macOS 11+ and Windows 11 support WebP natively, but many older apps, email clients, and mobile apps don't. JPG is the most universally compatible raster image format, supported by virtually everything.

Can I convert animated WebP to JPG?

Animated WebP files are not currently supported. Only the first frame will be decoded. For animated WebP, consider converting to GIF (though this reduces color quality) using a specialized video tool.
