They don't all do it the same way, and picking wrong means either wasted storage or audio that sounds worse than it needs to. Here's what actually separates them and which one fits your situation.

How the three formats differ#

MP3 — lossy compression#

MP3 permanently discards audio data that's judged inaudible to most listeners (psychoacoustic compression), which is why it gets so small: a 4-minute song is roughly 3–4 MB at 128 kbps, or 9–10 MB at 320 kbps. That compression is a one-way trip — once the data is gone, no amount of re-encoding brings it back. WAV — uncompressed#

Which one should you actually use?#

Everyday listening, phones, and streaming: MP3. Every device and app plays it, files are small enough to hold thousands of songs, and at 192–320 kbps it's transparent for nearly everyone. Converting an MP3 to WAV or FLAC does not undo the lossy compression — whatever detail MP3 encoding discarded is gone permanently. The resulting WAV or FLAC file will be larger, but it's still exactly as lossy as the MP3 it came from; you've just wrapped a lossy file in a lossless container.
