How to use this tool

Frequently Asked Questions

Does resizing reduce image quality?

Downscaling (making an image smaller) has minimal quality impact and often looks excellent. Upscaling (enlarging) uses bilinear interpolation which can look soft or pixelated for significant enlargements — typically anything beyond 150% of the original. For best results, always work from the highest-resolution original.

What is aspect ratio and why does it matter?

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height. A 1920×1080 image has a 16:9 aspect ratio. If you change width to 960 and height stays 1080, the image will be stretched and distorted. Enabling aspect lock maintains the original proportions automatically.

Can I resize transparent PNG images?

Yes. PNG images with alpha channel transparency are fully supported. The transparent areas are preserved after resizing. If you resize a PNG with transparency, the output PNG also retains transparency.

What is the maximum size I can upscale to?

There is no fixed limit, but browser memory constraints apply for very large images. Upscaling a 1 MP image to 100 MP would require significant memory and may fail on low-memory devices. For extreme upscaling, consider AI super-resolution tools which add realistic detail rather than just interpolating pixels.

How is resizing different from cropping?

Resizing changes the dimensions of the entire image by stretching or shrinking it. Cropping cuts out a rectangular portion of the image and discards the rest, keeping the content at original pixel density. Use resize when you need specific output dimensions; use crop when you want to remove parts of the frame. We have a separate crop tool on this site.
