UTM Parser: Take Any Campaign Link Apart

Paste one tagged link or fifty to see every campaign parameter GA4 will read, and the mistakes that would break attribution. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste your links

Paste one tagged URL or a list of up to 50, one per line. Links copied from an ad platform, an email tool or a browser address bar all work, with or without https://.

  2. Read the breakdown

Each link gets a card listing its campaign parameters by name, then any other parameters on it, with click IDs labelled by the ad platform that added them.

  3. Review warnings and channel

Warnings point out duplicated keys, parameters GA4 cannot read, capital letters and spaces. The channel card shows where GA4 will file the visit and why.

  4. Copy or edit

Copy the clean URL, with campaign parameters and click IDs removed, or choose Edit in builder to fix the link in the Campaign URL Builder with every field filled in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a UTM parser do?

A UTM parser splits a tagged link into its parts: the landing page and each campaign parameter with its decoded value. It turns utm_campaign=spring%20sale into "spring sale" so you can check at a glance that a link says what you think it says before it goes into an ad, an email or a report.

What happens if a UTM parameter appears twice?

GA4 reads only the first occurrence of each parameter and ignores the rest. A link ending in utm_source=facebook&utm_source=instagram is reported as facebook. Duplicates usually come from tagging a link that was already tagged, and this parser flags every repeated key so you can remove the extra one.

Does GA4 read UTM_SOURCE in capitals?

No. GA4 only recognises parameter names in lowercase, so UTM_Source or Utm_Medium is treated as an unknown parameter and its value is lost. This is different from the values, which GA4 reads in any case but reports case-sensitively. The parser marks miscased names as errors.

What are gclid and fbclid?

They are click identifiers that Google Ads and Meta add to links automatically when someone clicks an ad. They let the ad platform match the click to a conversion. You should not add them yourself, and the parser labels them by platform and leaves them out of the clean URL.

What is the clean URL?

The clean URL is your landing page with every campaign parameter and known click ID removed, while its own query string and #anchor stay intact. Use it when you want to share a page without tracking, or as the starting point for tagging the link again from scratch.

Are the links I paste stored or sent anywhere?

No. Parsing happens entirely in JavaScript in your browser, so the links never reach a server. Even the Edit in builder button passes the link through the part of the address after the # sign, which browsers never send to any server.
