Campaign URL Builder: Tag Links for Google Analytics 4

Tag any link with UTM parameters so GA4 knows which ad, email or post sent each visitor, and see the channel it will land in before you publish. Nothing leaves your browser.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the landing page

Paste the page people should arrive on into Website URL. If the link already carries UTM parameters, they move into the fields automatically, and any other query string or #anchor is kept exactly as it was.

  2. Fill in source, medium and campaign

Campaign source is required: the site or list that sends the visit, such as google or newsletter. Add a medium such as cpc or email and a campaign name, or use a quick-fill button for Google Ads, Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads or an email newsletter.

  3. Fix what the warnings flag

The panel warns about capital letters, spaces, a source and medium entered the wrong way round, and a missing medium. Each warning suggests the value to use, so every link in a campaign reports on one row.

  4. Check the GA4 channel, then copy

The channel card shows where GA4 will file the traffic, for example Paid Social or Email, and why. When it is right, copy the URL or open it to test that the landing page loads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a campaign URL?

A campaign URL is a normal link with UTM parameters added to the end, such as ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email. When someone clicks it, Google Analytics reads those parameters and credits the visit to that source, medium and campaign instead of lumping it in with direct or referral traffic.

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source is the one parameter never to skip: without it, GA4 reports the source as "(not set)", so the visit cannot be credited to anyone. Add utm_medium and utm_campaign too, because GA4 uses the medium to choose a channel and the campaign name to give the link its own row in reports.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Yes. GA4 reports "Facebook", "facebook" and "FACEBOOK" as three different sources, which splits one campaign's numbers across several rows. The safest convention is lowercase everywhere with underscores instead of spaces, and this builder warns you and suggests the lowercase value whenever a field breaks that rule.

Why does my campaign show as Unassigned in GA4?

GA4 files a visit as Unassigned when its source and medium match none of the default channel rules, which usually means a nonstandard medium such as "facebook" or "offline". The channel card in this builder shows the channel before you publish, so you can switch to a medium GA4 recognises, such as paid_social or email.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

No, not when used on links from ads, emails and social posts, which is what they are for. Search engines treat the tagged URL as a duplicate of the clean page and follow its canonical tag. Do not add UTM parameters to internal links on your own site, because they overwrite the visitor's original source.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The link is assembled by JavaScript in your browser as you type, and nothing is uploaded, logged or stored on a server. The only network request happens if you click Test link, which opens your own landing page in a new tab exactly as a visitor would.
